The Argen Corporation will be providing a hands-on demonstration of laser sintered metal copings. In addition to explaining the cost benefits of incorporating this technology in your lab, our technician will provide an overview of the process as well as metal finishing techniques. System requirements and helpful hints will be discussed.

Marlin Gohn, CDT, technical education manager at Argen, graduated from Larayco Dental Arts College in 1972 with a degree in Dental Technology. After graduation, he worked as a Dental Technician for 25 years in California while running his own lab for 17 years. Marlin received his CDT in Ceramics in 1979.

Tim Smith began his career in dentistry at the Academy of Health Sciences as a Dental Laboratory Specialist, when he joined the Army in 1983. Mr. Smith completed training as a Dental Specialist finishing in the top of his class and then continued with his Dental Laboratory Specialist training, graduating as The Distinguished Honor Graduate. Mr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the State of New York prior to exiting the service. Mr. Smith opened and operated a dental laboratory specializing in dentures prior to working for Astra Tech.

Tony Bulley, RDT will demonstrate green state color liquid application in addition to final custom characterization in glazing of Full Contour Zirconia restorations.

In 1986, Tony successfully completed his Dental Technology apprenticeship, earning the title RDT in his native London, England. He worked in a small laboratory in world-renowned Harley Street, specializing in cosmetic dentistry. Since moving to the United States, Tony has lectured and conducted hands-on courses throughout North America, specializing in advanced ceramic techniques. He is currently Manager and Continuing Education Director at Dental South, Inc. in Gainesville, GA.

With the addition of the Cercon® Eye scanner rapid manufacturing of zirconia or resin, frameworks are now easier than ever. The Cercon Eye scans dies and models for crowns and bridges using a three camera system as well as a laser, for extremely precise measurements and a scan time of less than 20 seconds per unit. Design in the Cercon® Art module is also quick and easy with its Wizard technology which allows for push-button simplicity and increased machining accuracy. The presentation will demonstrate the CAD/CAM technology that allows anyone to quickly fabricate zirconia or resin substructures.

Today, dental labs have a mix of PFM porcelains and ingots that are specific to each type of restoration. In most cases, these materials cannot be interchanged which results in confusion, longer processing times, and large inventories. New technologies have been developed that overcomes these issues. This presentation will show you how a single porcelain system can be used to fabricate PFM’s, Veneer All-Ceramic restorations, and how to use a single ingot for Press-To-Metal and All- Ceramic restorations.

Kathy Catanzaro, CDT is currently employed with DENTSPLY Prosthetics as a Technical Specialist with over 15 years experience in the dental laboratory field. Kathy joined our Ceramco team in 2002, and has become an integral part of our Technical Center in Burlington, New Jersey helping to train our customers in our various Fixed Crown and Bridge product lines, handling the day-to-day technical phone support, and also working closely with our sales reps in the field.

Nancy S. Franceschi, BA, CDT was born in Verdun, France and raised in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico where she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a double major in Arts and Biology. Over her 22 years of experience as a technician, Nancy has studied with several world-class clinicians and master ceramists. She is currently the District Manager for the Southeastern US and the Caribbean.

A ceramist and former laboratory owner, Greg Martin, CDT has been a dental technician for over 10 years and District Manager for GC America, Inc.’s Laboratory Division since 2007. He holds a Biology degree from the University of NC at Chapel Hill, and is an Honor Graduate of the Dental Technology program at Durham Technical Community College.

Donald Yancey, CDT has been involved in the dental profession since 1973. He has gained a broad background in dentistry by working as a chair side assistant in the U.S. Navy, as a laboratory technician, and as the owner / operator of a highly specialized removable laboratory. He actively lectures at Universities, Dental study groups and Laboratory functions. Don is certified in Full Dentures and is presently the Prosthetic Specialist for Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc. in the Southeastern part of the United States.

With 20 years experience as an educator, David plans to offer education courses this year with this Open concept as the primary factor.

Tom Bormes, MBA studied business administration at St. John’s University in Minnesota, physics at the University of Minnesota, and completed his graduate studies in the MBA program at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California.

Tom has spent the past 40 years in the dental industry, and is well known as a friend and supporter of both dentistry and the dental laboratory.

Attendees will learn advantages of welding over soldering and how to weld without the cost of purchasing a laser welder. This short 30 minute presentation will describe how to use the phaser pulse arc micro welder on all different sorts of cases, i.e., partials, bridge work, implants, adding margins, patching holes, adding contact points and more.

Joachim Mosch, CDT studied dental engineering and technology and is well experienced in international business. He has been managing the European headquarters of an American dental company for 18 years before he started his own businesses (Primotec / Primodent) in the year 2000.

Mark Stueck, CDT began his career in Alabama in 1980 where he developed his crown and bridge skills. After completing his CDT in 1989, he moved to Charlotte, N.C. to team with Billy Drake at Drake Precision Dental Lab. He is now manager of the crown and bridge area as well as the implant division, which he was instrumental in creating. He facilitates BETA testing for several major implant companies and attends numerous implant programs each year.

April McDowell joined the SafeLink Consulting team in 2006 as the Director of Training Development and brings 24 years of experience in safety, occupational health, workers compensation and industrial hygiene to the dental industry. April’s formal education was achieved at Murray State University of Kentucky where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Occupational Safety and Health Engineering.

Tait also covers selected combination cases using the C&B feature set in conjunction with partial framework design. This course is appropriate for technicians of all levels, with or without experience in digital design.

Matt has over 36 years experience in Dental Technology and has been an R.D.T. since 1985. Prior to joining SensAble, he was the general manager of a 20-person lab specializing in partial frameworks.  He has held positions as an owner/partner of a high-end lab in England , specializing in attachments and maxillary facial technology, and as a senior technician in a lab that produced over 100 frames per day.  Matt holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Technology.

Using and appreciating a layered system that offers unique properties that mimic natural teeth is highly desired by any ceramist. The demands by the dental professionals resulted in a system that allows a technician of any skill level to layer quickly, achieve the desired form, and match shades with as few as two powders.

Also presented and demonstrated will be how to layer specialized metals like CAD/CAM milled Titanium frameworks. This unique alloy has properties that make it ideal for biocompatibility, economic and easy to work with. Layering Titanium frameworks using VITA Titanium ceramics provides the "pop" in the fabrication of very esthetic teeth.

Felix Pages, CDT graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1976 with an Associate of Arts Degree in Applied Science. Felix has acquired an international reputation as a superior instructor and lecturer. He currently owns Felix Pages Dental Studio in Miami, Florida and specializes in high quality all-ceramic and metal-ceramic restorations.

The "Standard of Care" for the fully edentulous patient has been defined as an implant involved denture. Combining a complete denture and dental implants is a complicated process and requires a high skill level between the crown and bridge and denture technician.

In addition, the daily challenge of deciding what occlusal scheme is best suited for each patient is often discussed between dentist and laboratory technician. To help discuss and answer many edentulous case challenges, Dennis Purinton, CDT will demonstrate the use of different styles of denture teeth.

Dennis Purinton, CDT has been a dental technician for more than 20 years. He owns his own lab in eastern Kansas, and has concentrated on implantology and dentures for the past 10 years. As a consultant for the Vident Corporation, he is actively involved in research and development for implant and denture related products and has trained at VITA in Germany.

The Lean for the Lab process must start with the 5S program. Chaos, confusion and clutter must be eliminated before true gains can be made in flow and product streaming.

This session will show how to start, standardize and sustain the efforts that is the cornerstone to Lean Manufacturing process improvement. Practical exercises will be done to illustrate the value and ease of this process.

The ProCal Calibration Device checks and recalibrates the temperature settings on Pro 200 Series furnaces. The easy to use devices features automatic calibration – no manual adjustment is required. This session will show how the unit automatically heat soaks the furnace, checks specific temperature in 5 minutes and automatically analyzes and recalibrates the Pro 200 for both low and high fusing porcelain temperatures.

A USA government evaluation agency recently completed and reported on the Xcavator Automated Divest Unit. They called it "a huge force-multiplier." Reporting on the cooling time and the divesting time for both the 100 and 200 gram rings showed a 44:20 minute saving on the 100 gram and 65:15 minute savings on the 200 gram ring. It was also their opinion that there was a "significant reduction of remakes from divesting." Learn how this tool can free up time and allow the technician to engage in more profitable activity.

Doug Frye, CDT will demonstrate how to build a porcelain crown using his premium esthetic build-up, "NO CUT-BACK" technique. It consists of an 8 powder build-up with modifiers and internal staining, in 1 bake, every 7 minutes, producing 20-30 units per day. Doug’s goal is to help technicians improve their speed and increase their customers’ satisfaction. "Re-creating nature…not just another crown."

Doug Frye, CDT owns Functional Esthetics Dental Lab operated by him and his wife Mary (Muffy). He has over 25 years of experience and 22 years as a clinician. In 1981, he graduated with an Applied Science Degree for dental technology, knowing that he wanted a career in this field. In 1988, Doug gave his first NBC-approved seminar in advanced dental ceramics, which was the starting point of his lecturing career.

This presentation focuses on the rapidly growing high technology business aspect of Open Architecture CAD (computer aided design) in the modern laboratory setting. The DWOS™ (Dental Wings Operating System) which is open architecture and how it integrates to the CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) portion of the modern laboratory business will be discussed. The open architecture CAD files can be output to the CAM systems currently available which allows for options in case design, material choice and the unlimited ability to manufacture prosthetic restorations. From designing copings, bridges, full anatomical overlays, and implant abutments with DWOS to milling and rapid prototyping the CAD designs.

Nannette Boyd, CDT joined the Zahn Team in 2008, bringing over 20 years experience in the Dental Industry. At Zahn, her responsibilities include Instructor, Installation and Technical Support for the Dental Wings Operating System. Nan assists customers throughout the training and implementation of CAD/CAM technology into their Dental Laboratory.
