Back Life is not always made up of our dreams…sometimes life gives you lemons and you need to know how to make lemonade…sometimes you have to make changes that aren’t so easy…so how do we get through each day as we meet its challenges? The same principles that apply to their happy marriage and successful careers can be applied to our businesses, to the workplace and our homes. Sometimes we need to be reminded how to keep living, laughing and loving what you do! Vince Dooley received his Bachelors Degree in Business Management and Masters in History. After serving in the Marines and as an assistant coach at Auburn, he was named head coach of the Bulldogs in 1963. Dooley still maintains his academic and continuing education interests by auditing classes at the University in such disciplines as history, political science, art history, and horticulture. Dooley is married to Barbara Meshad Dooley of Birmingham. For over 45 years, Vince Dooley has had an enduring impact on the University of Georgia, Southeastern Conference, and collegiate athletics across the country. Serving as head football coach at UGA from 1963-1988 and as Director of Athletics from 1979-2004, he has been the recipient of most of the nation’s highest honors including his recent recognition as the winner of the 2010 Bear Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award which recognizes excellence in coaching on and off the field during a career. Dooley was the 2004 recipient of the James J. Corbett Memorial Award presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the collegiate administrator who “through the years has most typified Corbett’s devotion to intercollegiate athletics and worked unceasingly for its betterment.” The award is the highest honor one can achieve in collegiate athletics administration. Almost
simultaneously, he was also named recipient of the John L. Toner Award presented annually by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. In 2006, Dooley and wife Barbara, were chosen as recipients of the Wooden Award presented by the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame for their lifetime contributions to sports and community service. Barbara Meshad Dooley was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Auburn University and received a Bachelors in Education degree in Speech Therapy and Mental Retardation and also a Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling. Barbara is married to Vincent J. Dooley, Athletic Director and former Head Football Coach of the University of Georgia. Together, they have four children: Deanna, Daniel, Denise, and Derek, and eleven grandchildren. Barbara has participated in numerous community activities since 1969, including service on various charitable Boards of Directors and in Chair or Honorary Chair positions. Barbara was presented the Athens Woman of the Year Golden Apple Award in 1979, the National Jewish Hospital Humanitarian Award in 1981, the Easter Seal AOscar@ Award in 1988, the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizens Award in 2001, and the Jean Harris Award-Volunteer of the Year-Athens Rotary Club in 2001. She currently hosts a morning talk show on WGAU and is the author of Put Me In Coach (1992). |
